| Every year, a remote Canadian town called Churchill is transformed into the polar bear capital of the world. In October and November, as many as 1200 bears gather here on the icy tundra, waiting for the sea in the bay to freeze so they can wander out in search of seals. Excellent sightings are virtually guaranteed and it's not unusual to see dozens of bears in a single day. |

The great advantage of polar bear watching in Churchill is that it's a comfortable adventure. Instead of camping on an ice field with an arctic wind howling through your tent, after you've spent a day with the bears you simply return to civilisation, eat a hearty home-cooked meal and then sleep in a comfortable hotel bed.
We venture into the wilderness during two full days in the comfort and safety of a specially-designed tundra vehicle which can go anywhere. It's heated and has an outdoor rear viewing platform. The bears aren't at all bothered by such a powerful all-terrain vehicle and will often stand on their hind legs to peer inside the windows. Often they simply ignore the vehicle and play-fight with one another nearby. The photographic opportunities are outstanding.
Weather permitting, we recommend the optional helicopter tour over Churchill (approximately £180 per person - booked locally) - awesome!
Stay in Winnipeg at the grand and elegant Fort Garry built in 1913. This landmark hotel is one of Winnipeg’s finest with facilities to match, and the breakfasts are legendary. We also stay at the Churchill Motel which serves hearty home-cooked breakfasts and the warm, comfortable beds are particularly welcoming after a day out on the tundra.
